Peroutka Awarded Papal Blessing: Lifetime of Service Recognized

When Paul Schenck visited Rome in September 2007 with a group of 100 pilgrims it was primarily a spiritual journey.  But there was one piece of business he just couldn’t resist.  Schenck scheduled an appointment at the Vatican to document the remarkable philanthropic work of Severna Park’s Steve Peroutka.  He submitted a detailed account of Peroutka’s pro-life work in the United States, including Peroutka’s creation of National Pro-Life Radio, and his formation of the Elizabeth Streb Peroutka Foundation (named for his mother) which supports a variety of pro-life causes.  Eleven months after Schenck completed the application the Papal Blessing arrived on Peroutka’s doorstep.

"Stephen Peroutka is the most generous, selfless and personally devoted man I have ever had the privilege of knowing and working with. He is constantly looking for new and meaningful ways to encourage and support ordinary people to do extraordinary things for life. He is smart, winsome and persuasive. I can't think of anybody with a more inspiring way of promoting the cause for the most essential human right - the right to human life." Summarized Dr. Schenck, Co-founder, the National Pro-Life Action Center and Respect Life Director of the Diocese of Harrisburg (PA).

Apparently, Pope Benedict agreed wholeheartedly.  Papal Blessings are not easy to come by given they are the highest commendation that the Holy Father can extend.  The document simply states that Pope Benedict XVI conveys his apostolic blessing to Stephen G. Peroutka.  As the successor to the first Pope, St. Peter, such recognition amounts to a lifetime achievement award for Peroutka who has garnered his share of accolades over the years.

"Attorney Stephen Peroutka is a man of integrity, dedication and vision. Through NPLR.NET, Face the Truth Radio and the National Pro-Life Action Center he is leading the way in transforming the media into a platform for the advancement of the pro-life message." Added Father Frank Pavone, National Director, Priests for Life.

Father Joseph Tuscan, Capuchin Friar and Catholic Chaplain, adds: “Steve Peroutka is a sterling example of the Catholic layman devoted to the cause of advocating for human life. I have come to see him as model for others to emulate."

Outside of the Catholic Church Peroutka has collected his share of friends and admirers as well.

"Steve Peroutka has set a tremendous example of pro-life commitment for every professional, businessman and citizen." Rev. Pat Mahoney, Presbyterian minister and President of The Christian Defense Coalition.

Minister, professional actor, and media analyst Rob McQuay adds:  "Steve is a great leader, who is media savvy and who sets the standard for pro-life, pro-family and pro-religious liberty broadcasters"

As for Peroutka himself, he remains very much the Catholic everyman, despite the high praise from his peers and the leader of the Catholic Church.  Behind his desk at his law office in Pasadena he self-effacingly describes the Papal Blessing as a testament to his parents Elizabeth and Anthony “Bud” Peroutka before concluding.  “Like any award for volunteerism I receive this blessing as a representative of all the volunteers dedicated to the pro-life cause.”
